There isn’t a learning professional today that would tell you that learning only takes place in the classroom. It happens every day, everywhere. Anything from reading a book, having a conversation, watching a video - even playing a game can be a learning experience. The challenge is that we haven’t yet figured out an efficient way to capture those experiences at data that can be measured, reported and analyzed.
As part of Training and Learning Architecture initiative from Advanced Distributed Learning, Rustici Software has developed a set of standards for tracking these experiences. Please join our panel of experts as they discuss what the Tin Can API is, what it isn’t, and what it can do for you.
The session will cover the following:
The business needs that led to the genesis of Tin Can API
How it is different from SCORM/AICC
The current evolution of the API
Who is using it and how
The future of Tin Can API
Panel:
Aaron Silvers, Community Manager, ADL
Mike Rustici, CEO, Rustici Software
Michael Roberts, CEO, vTrainingRoom, Inc.
Ellen Meiselman, Programmer Analyst, University of Michigan Health System
Michael Rochelle, Chief Strategy Officer, Brandon Hall Group

* The new role of the Learning Record Store (LRS) as a central hub of learning data
* The introduction of independent Training Delivery Services (TDS) for content delivery
* The role of the LMS in this new world
* Accessibility of data in and out of the enterprise
* Unexpected sources of learning activity data
* Measuring the business impacts of training and learning initiatives through outcome analysis

The Tin Can API: connecting the dots with data
Starts: June 18, 2013 - 8:00 am
Ends: June 18, 2013 - 9:00 am
Location: Learning Skills and Group Conference, London
Description: Presented by: Megan Bowe, Strategist, Rustici Software
Launched on 26th April as a formal 1.0 specification, the Tin Can API (aka The Experience API) is billed as the great way of sharing data on learning and activities seamlessly between applications. It’s been called ‘SCORM done right’. In this session Megan Bowe picks up from where her colleague Tim Martin left off in January, and uses case studies to illustrate putting Tin Can to work collecting and using data to support individuals on their learning journeys, whatever their activities:
* The grammar and systems evolving in the world of Tin Can
* Statement structure and using the Learning Record Store
* Working with existing tools and content
* Personal data lockers – who owns your data?
* Getting started – your first steps

The Tin Can API workshop: putting the Experienced API to work
Starts: June 18, 2013 - 9:30 am
Ends: June 18, 2013 - 10:30 am
Location: Learning Skills and Group Conference
Description: Presented by: Megan Bowe, Strategist, Rustici Software
This workshop is designed to help systems designers and developers learn more about working with the Experience API (better known as the Tin Can API) and making the most of it. There is a limit to what can be covered in one hour, so delegates are invited to bring specific issues if they have them, but the session is certainly also open to those interested in – but not currently working with – Tin Can. As well as looking at development specifics, Megan will consider systems design, in particular the crucial initial planning of connecting activities to outcomes, and building feedback loops.
* Thinking about systems – the right place to start
* Working with other specifications for interoperability, such as Mozilla's Open Badges
* Using a Training Delivery Service and Learning Record Store
* Emerging best practices
* Exploring security and authentication features
